Remembering – Reappraise – Understand.
The history of colonialism is not a distant one. It has left its traces – in the former colonies as well as in Germany. In cities like Göttingen, these traces were barely visible for a long time. Yet from the very beginning, the colonial project was inconceivable without support from the centre of German society: In universities and school text books, in bourgeois initiatives and in military units, in scientific collections, at weekly markets and in monuments, colonialism was not only supported but also actively shaped.
The exhibition, which was shown at the Göttingen City Museum from September 2024 to February 2025, focuses on this local dimen sions of German colonialism on the spot.
